Casio Brings Back the Iconic DW-5000: The New Model Is Identical to the Original G-Shock (but Better)

  • The first G-Shock was released in 1983.

  • Now, 41 years later, its essence returns to the market.

G-Shock has become one of Casio’s most renowned watch series. Over the years, products under this label have evolved to become more comprehensive and robust. However, some enthusiasts prefer the classic models.

On Thursday, 41 years after launching the original G-Shock (DW-5000C), the Japanese company introduced the G-Shock DW-5000R to pay tribute to the iconic 1983 design. The new watch is visually identical except for subtle differences.

Casio’s Original G-Shock Is Back

When Casio first introduced the G-Shock series in the 1980s, the company had a clear vision: to create a durable watch that could withstand drops without breaking. At that time, watches were delicate, akin to today’s smartphones, and a fall could easily result in shattered glass.

Casio achieved its goal with the original G-Shock and developed a watch with a resistant stainless steel case, complemented by a synthetic bezel and strap. The newly presented model retains its essence but features slight improvements, including the use of bio-based materials and an upgraded LED backlight with enhanced brightness.

In the image below, the original watch is on the left, and the updated model is on the right. It’s evident that Casio has meticulously crafted a product that closely resembles the original, paying attention to even the finest visual details. Notably, the new model also has a “brick pattern” across the surface of the dial.

In addition to telling the time, the new Casio watch offers a 1/100-second stopwatch function, a countdown timer, an alarm, and an LED backlight. Its back has a metal cover with the inscription “Shock Resistant.” The case dimensions are 48.9 x 42.3 x 13.1 mm, and it weighs only 76 grams. It’s priced at around $220.
