OpenAI’s Goal Goes Beyond Just ChatGPT. It Wants to Be the Next Google

After developing ChatGPT, DALL·E, and other AI models, OpenAI now aims to become a major player in the tech sector with its own infrastructure and a user base of 1 billion people.

OpenAI is currently undergoing a significant transformation. After creating the world’s most renowned chatbot and redefining the concept of “AI” for the world, it now aims to establish itself as a truly global tech giant.

Why it matters. After recently achieving a valuation milestone of $150 billion, the AI startup aims to reach 1 billion users by 2025. This would position the company alongside tech giants such as Google and Meta.

Data:

  • OpenAI raised $6.6 billion in its latest funding round.
  • It has 250 million weekly active users.
  • It reported more than $5 billion in annual losses.
  • It employs 2,000 people (up from about 400 a year ago).

Context. OpenAI is currently constructing its own network of data centers in the U.S., developing an AI-based search engine that’s still in its early stages, and preparing to launch AI agents capable of performing complex online tasks.

This strategy strongly resembles the early years of Google, although the technological landscape was completely different then.

Behind the scenes. The AI company is undergoing a significant shift in focus. Originally established as a nonprofit research lab, it’s now evolving into a commercial powerhouse that aims to compete directly with existing tech giants.

“We’re in a massive growth phase,” OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told the Financial Times, adding, “We need to be on the frontier on the [AI] model front. That is expensive.”

An inflection point. The company's recent alliance with Apple is poised to become a crucial milestone for OpenAI. Integrating ChatGPT into more than 2 billion iPhones worldwide will take time, primarily due to the deadlines that Apple’s team is managing for Apple Intelligence. However, once this integration occurs, it could serve as a significant gateway to achieving the goal of reaching 1 billion users.

Difficulties. The path forward isn’t easy. According to The New York Times, OpenAI is facing annual losses exceeding $8 billion, and it’s still far from breaking even.

The AI startup is also dealing with a lawsuit from its former partner, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who wants to nullify OpenAI’s commercial agreement with Microsoft.

Bottom line:

  • OpenAI is fully committed to becoming the leading source of information in the age of AI.
  • This transformation has the potential to reshape the global technology landscape, but it also risks consuming all its resources along the way.
