Windows Officially Launches the ChatGPT App. It's Different From the Mac App in One Key Way

  • The ChatGPT app for Windows is exclusively available to paying users.

  • The desktop version doesn’t include a voice mode.

For the last few months, PC users have been waiting for the release of ChatGPT for Windows. OpenAI announced the Mac version in May and finally launched its popular chatbot for Microsoft’s operating system on Thursday.

However, Windows users will still have a more limited experience compared to those using macOS. The recently released ChatGPT app for PC is only an “early version,” which means it doesn’t offer the full suite of features. Additionally, it’s only accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu plan subscribers.

ChatGPT on PC: Advantages and Limitations

The primary advantage of having a ChatGPT desktop app is its seamless integration with the operating system. Windows users can press Alt + Space to open the chatbot in a separate window. This feature is the most significant benefit, allowing you to customize the experience to your preferences. In addition, you can easily hide the chatbot using the same Alt + Space shortcut.

In both the main window and the one that opens when you use the key combination, users can upload files and images to enhance their conversations with ChatGPT. The Windows version also allows you to create images with DALL·E and provides access to the preliminary version of o1, OpenAI’s model capable of “reasoning.”

When it comes to the downsides, the ChatGPT app for Windows lacks some features available on macOS, such as the ability to use voice input for both text entry and conversation with the chatbot. OpenAI said on Thursday that it plans to release “the full experience” to all users later this year.

Another limitation is that the PC version of the chatbot is only accessible to those who subscribe to ChatGPT. This is similar to the initial Mac release, which was also exclusive to paying users for a period of time.

The delayed launch of the Windows app is notable mainly for two reasons. First, Windows is the most widely used desktop operating system globally. Additionally, Microsoft has invested more than $10 billion in OpenAI.

Nevertheless, the ChatGPT app for Windows can now be downloaded from the Microsoft Store if you’re interested.
