Good Old Games guarantees that the games in its program will remain functional over time.
A recent study conducted by the Video Game History Foundation reveals that 87% of classic games released in the U.S. are at risk of disappearing. Many games players enjoyed in the past are no longer accessible, while others seem to be heading in the same direction.
On Wednesday, Good Old Games (GOG), a video game distribution platform that competes with Steam and the Epic Games Store, launched an initiative to tackle the problem. The GOG Preservation Program ensures that hundreds of classic games will remain compatible with modern systems, even if their developers stop supporting them.
GOG and Its Initiative to Preserve Classic Video Games
If a game is part of its Preservation Program, GOG promises to use its resources to ensure compatibility over time. Currently, the initiative features 100 titles, including Diablo: Hellfire, Heroes of Might and Magic, and a Resident Evil bundle. The prices for these titles range from $4.99 to $12.49.
How can you find the games included in the GOG Preservation Program? There are two main options. First, you can explore the program’s dedicated page. Alternatively, you can use the “Good Old Games” filter located on the left panel of the store’s main page. Games included in the program will be labeled as “Good Old Games,” as shown in the screenshot below.
GOG says that it plans to add more games to its Preservation Program in the future. It also points out that once a game is added, it won’t be removed. However, it’s important to note that support is currently limited to Windows PC users, with no plans to expand the service to macOS and Linux at this time.
Other players in the industry are also focused on preserving video games. For example, Microsoft aims to maintain backward compatibility for its Xbox consoles.
