Apple’s Original Vision Pro Might Be Nearing Its End. The Company Is Reportedly Cutting Production and Thinking About Discontinuing It

The original Vision Pro is in its final days, at least according to The Information. The outlet reports that Apple has “sharply scaled back production” of its mixed reality headset since early summer and may cease production of the current model altogether by the end of this year.

Apple’s purported adjustment in the supply chain is said to be a direct result of accumulated inventory. Sources consulted by The Information indicate that the tech giant has enough units to meet demand for the foreseeable future. The publication also mentions Apple’s efforts to focus on creating a more affordable headset.

The Production of the Original Vision Pro Might Be Coming to an End

Data shared by The Information provides insight into the current state of the Vision Pro’s journey. Luxshare, the Chinese company responsible for assembling the headset, initially peaked at 2,000 units per day. However, this number has now decreased to around 1,000 units per day.

The decline in production seems to have begun in May, coinciding with rumors of diminished interest in the original model and a possible pause in the development of the Vision Pro 2. Additionally, some experts pointed to a more affordable headset that would feature fewer functions but be lighter.

According to sources consulted by The Information, Luxshare has assembled between 500,000 and 600,000 headsets since production started last year. This figure differs from some analysts’ projections. Counterpoint Research said that Apple sold about 370,000 units in the first quarter of the year and estimates the company will sell an additional 50,000 by the end of 2024.

In any case, only Apple knows how well or poorly Vision Pro is performing. It should be noted that this is a first-generation product that still has a long way to go if it aims to eventually become a mass-market offering.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently addressed this in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. He said, “At $3,500, it’s not a mass-market product. Right now, it’s an early-adopter product. People who want to have tomorrow’s technology today–that’s who it’s for.”

Looking ahead, a more affordable mixed-reality headset could arrive before the end of 2025. Based on current rumors, the company is said to be focusing its efforts on this project. It’s also worth noting that while high-end “Vision Pro 2” isn’t ruled out, its development has reportedly been paused.
