Here’s where it all begins (again). With Superman comes the trailer for the renewed DC Cinematic Universe. This bet will span the next few years, giving fans a small appetizer with the animated series Monster Command. Since the box-office disaster of The Flash, it has been clear that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom would mark the end of the DC Universe shaped by Zack Snyder’s Justice League. In response, DC Films CEO James Gunn promised a complete overhaul.

That overhaul is already evident in a trailer that appears more colorful and comic-book-inspired than previous DC adaptations. Even the sentimental aspects feel “lighter” than Snyder’s somber tone. Early reviews have drawn comparisons to CW TV series—not an unfair parallel, as those shows were often more faithful to the DC spirit than Snyder’s brooding films.

However, the trailer includes surprises beyond the expected elements (such as Krypto saving the day). These surprises involve the introduction of other DC Universe characters, including Green Lanterns Guy Gardner and John Stewart, as well as Hawkgirl. Gunn has stated his DC won’t overly focus on shared universes that have strained the MCU, but these appearances suggest otherwise. Unlike the fleeting presence of Black Adam’s Justice Society, these characters are set to play significant roles, with a Lanterns TV series already in development.

Gunn also seems to draw inspiration from Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of Superman. The focus on Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and the Daily Planet, combined with a vintage aesthetic, underscores this intent. On the downside, some color treatments in the trailer appear overly artificial. While not as glaring as in the previous teaser, this issue stands out in a few shots but could easily be corrected. The film, slated for release next July, signals a departure from Snyder’s style. For now, that’s reason enough for optimism.
