Apple might be on the verge of announcing a new product category sooner than many expect. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant will unveil a centralized smart home control device in March 2025, designed to compete with Amazon’s Echo Hub.
According to sources consulted by Gurman, the device, known internally as J490, will allow users to manage several smart home devices, such as lights, security cameras, and thermostats. In addition, it’ll reportedly include a camera and microphones, enabling users to make video calls.
Apple Intelligence Takes Center Stage
Rumors suggest that one of the standout features of Apple’s reported new smart home device will be its integration of Apple Intelligence. Bloomberg reports that the AI system will provide a more intuitive and user-friendly experience through a new app and task management system called Apps Intents, which Apple hasn’t officially announced yet.
The new Siri could also play a significant role in this device. While users will purportedly have the option to interact through the built-in touchscreen, Apple purportedly expects voice commands to be the primary method of engagement. According to Gurman, the device will run on a new operating system that combines elements from the Apple Watch system and the iPhone’s StandBy mode.
While leaked details about the product are limited, sources consulted by Bloomberg indicate that it may feature sensors capable of detecting the user’s distance from the device. This functionality could allow the screen to display different types of information. For instance, it could show a temperature indicator when the user is far away, and smart home controls when they’re nearby.
The product is expected to be officially unveiled in March 2025. If confirmed, this launch would be part of a broader strategy by Apple, which reportedly includes the development of additional home devices, such as a desktop device with a screen and robots designed to navigate within the home.
