AI apps are constantly evolving and becoming increasingly advanced. In the early months of ChatGPT, users could only interact with the chatbot using text messages. This situation often prompted them to refine their prompting techniques to achieve the desired results.

However, new features, including voice prompts, have emerged over time. In October, OpenAI started to roll out a feature called Canvas, which was in beta and provided a more versatile way to engage with the AI tool. The feature is finally available to all users.

One of the Most Promising Features of ChatGPT

Canvas has the potential to enhance productivity with ChatGPT. This innovation enables users to interact directly with content, such as text and programming code. Effectively, it feels like having a word processor in the OpenAI chatbot that can significantly streamline the process of crafting precise textual instructions.

To grasp the capabilities of the Canvas tool, it’s best to see it in action. To begin using it, open ChatGPT and write an initial textual request.

In this example, I’ve asked ChatGPT to create a story for a five-year-old: “Hi, please help me write a story for a five-year-old titled ‘Giuseppe The Cat in Rome.’” You should provide as much context as possible. After submitting your request, ChatGPT should generate the text in a side panel rather than in the chat panel. Otherwise, ask the tool to open a canvas.

Since this is a collaborative tool for both users and the AI, you’ll be able to edit the text directly. You won’t need to create a new prompt if you want to change, copy, and paste a part of the text. It functions similarly to tools like Word and Google Docs but is powered by OpenAI’s technology.

In addition to having formatting options such as bold and italics, you can manually replace any sections of text. ChatGPT’s Canvas allows users to select specific parts of the text and ask the tool to modify it. For instance, you can request a change to a character’s name and even add emojis. The interaction with the chatbot is much simpler now.

Canvas

Canvas can also be extremely useful for programming. After pasting a piece of code into the ChatGPT window, you can open a canvas and start interacting with it. One of the new features is the ability to execute Python code directly within Canvas.

In all cases, ChatGPT’s Canvas will provide shortcuts ranging from script suggestions to code review. The good news is that access is no longer limited to paid users. This means all ChatGPT users can now use the new feature and start experimenting with it to maximize its potential.

Does OpenAI’s latest features sound familiar? This is probably because you may have heard of Claude’s Artifacts. This feature was introduced in Anthropic’s chatbot in June 2024, promising to substantially improve the way users interact with the chatbot. Overall, Artifacts makes it easier to create texts, web pages, and even simple games.
