OpenAI launched SearchGPT in late July. ChatGPT’s innovative search feature aimed to enhance the way users find information using the power of artificial intelligence. This development posed a significant challenge to Google, which has long dominated the search market without facing a serious competitor.
However, SearchGPT initially had some drawbacks compared to the product it aimed to rival. Its access was limited to paid users, and its interface was somewhat difficult to navigate. On Monday, OpenAI finally made ChatGPT’s search function available to everyone at no cost and made some tweaks to improve the experience.
You No Longer Need to Pay to Use SearchGPT
OpenAI has high expectations for SearchGPT. From the beginning, the company has highlighted that the tool is designed to help users find useful answers more efficiently than traditional search engines. With it, OpenAI wants to eliminate the need for multiple searches to find quality sources.
The company proposes an AI-driven search that allows users to ask questions in the most natural way possible. The results will present a generative answer, accompanied by relevant links, encouraging you to continue the conversation. This approach offers a user experience similar to other services like Perplexity.
Interestingly, OpenAI’s AI tool is no longer restricted to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Edu, and Team users. All free ChatGPT users will soon have access to the new search experience on both chatgpt.com and the mobile apps for iOS and Android. If the feature is enabled, you should see a Search button.
In a recent YouTube video, the OpenAI team explains how to use SearchGPT. To start, you should type in a search term. For example, you can ask, “What are some good events in San Francisco this weekend?”
OpenAI is also introducing ChatGPT’s search function in its advanced voice mode. This feature can be very helpful when you need up-to-date information while conversing with the AI chatbot. For instance, during a trip, you could ask about the best available routes, nearby restaurant recommendations, public transportation schedules, and more.
