Tesla CEO Elon Musk has successfully relocated his companies to Texas following legal issues in Delaware that almost cost him $46 billion. This move seems to have sparked a desire in Musk to create a new home for his family, although his approach is unconventional.
He already has a place to call home. The New York Times recently reported that Musk has purchased a complex of three mansions in Austin where his 11 children and their three mothers can reside.
A new home in the heart of Texas. According to the outlet, Musk has traded his modest 20-square-foot prefabricated home near the SpaceX offices in Boca Chica for a luxurious mansion in an exclusive residential area of Austin.
According to data obtained by The New York Times, Musk’s new compound has an area of 14,400 square feet and features architecture reminiscent of Italy’s Tuscany. This isn’t the only property the tech mogul has purchased in the area. He has reportedly invested around $35 million in acquiring two additional mansions in recent months.
One of these mansions, which has six bedrooms, is situated directly behind the first house. With it, Musk intends to create a complex that enables him to strengthen family ties by gathering all his children in one location.
The Tesla CEO is also rumored to have purchased a third house just a few feet away from the other two, which he purportedly plans to use as his residence. Sources consulted by the Times indicate that Musk may have paid between 20% and 70% above the market price for these properties.
A large family. Musk is a strong advocate for pro-natalism. He’s the father of 11 children, whose ages range from 20 years to just a few months old. Many of his children were conceived through in vitro fertilization, which is why many of them are twins or triplets. Additionally, they’re from three different mothers, and some of their names are quite difficult to pronounce.
According to journalist Walter Isaacson in his biography of Musk, the SpaceX founder had his first child in 2002 with his first wife, Justine Musk. The baby sadly passed away from sudden infant death syndrome when he was only ten weeks old. Following this tragedy, Musk opted for assisted reproduction techniques to have his 11 children. He also has kids with two other women: Claire Boucher, known professionally as Grimes, and Shivon Zilis, a Neuralink executive who hasn’t officially been Musk’s partner.
A house for the family. According to The New York Times, Musk has proposed a mansion complex as a residence for his children and their mothers. The compound has been designed as a space where all the siblings can live together while still allowing their mothers to maintain independence.
At present, only Zilis, the mother of three of Musk’s youngest children, has agreed to move into the residential complex with her children. Grimes, who previously lived in Austin, is currently embroiled in a custody dispute with Musk concerning her children, making her less receptive to the idea. Additionally, Vivian, one of Musk’s eldest daughters from his marriage to Justine, told NBC News that she wants nothing to do with her father.
Musk leads by example. Musk’s recent real estate acquisitions in Texas reflect his views on fatherhood and his belief in the urgent need to increase global birth rates. On several occasions, he's emphasized on X that having children should be considered a national emergency due to declining birth rates worldwide.
A modest neighborhood for a public figure. Musk’s new neighbors have said that they can tell when he’s home due to heightened security and other indicators, such as the frequent arrival of home services. Retired rancher Jim Lewis, who lives nearby, told The New York Times, “I just keep thinking with that much money, he’s probably got lots of whims and he’ll do something else soon.”
In recent years, Musk has had to increase his security staff, particularly after he publicly expressed his support for former president Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
